Lucy Maud Montgomery was an Canadian author born thirtieth November eighteen seventy-four and passed twenty-fourth April nineteen forty-two leaving behind one of the best characters written today. It was Anne of Green Gables that Lucy was best known for, a books series spanning eight main books from nineteen zero eight to nineteen thirty-nine and has more than fifteen television adaptations. I’ve seen most of the television adaptation however none of them compare to the original books written by Lucy. 1. Anne Of Green Gables (1908)
Anne, an eleven year old orphaned girl is mistakenly sent to Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who sent for a boy to help on their farm Green Gables in the small island town of Avonlea starting the adventures of Anne attending school, befriending Diana Berry and winning the hearts of both Matthew and Marilla. Anne’s talkative, kind personality, and smart imagination helps guide her through her teen years with other kindred spirts, and higher education. The full book starts with eleven-year-old Anne to sixteen-year-old Anne.
2. Chronicles Of Avonlea (1912)
This book is not included within the main series but is always a fun read. The book involves short stories about the residents of Avonlea as they experience love, family and conflicts.
3. Anne of Avonlea (1909)
From sixteen to eighteen-year-old Anne we follow the start of her career with her first teaching job at Avonlea school all while continuing her studies. While teaching at the school Anne faces challenges with her students, raising orphaned twins and co-founds the village improvement society.
4. Anne of the Island (1915)
During the third book Anne leaves Green Gables once more to attend Redmond College in Nova Scotia for four years to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree, during her time there Anne makes new friends and faces challenges of college life. She also faces a few Romantic pursuits all while realizing her true feelings for her old school ‘friend’ Gilber Blyth. During this book Anne is eighteen to twenty-two.
5. Anne of Windy Poplars (1936)
From twenty-two to twenty-five years of age Anne is engaged to Gilbert Blyth however this time is spent apart with Anne taking on a principal position at Summerside High School while Gilbert attends medical school. This book revolves around romance, friendships and community.
6. Anne’s house of dreams (1917)
From aged twenty-five to twenty-seven we follow the beginning of Anne and Gilberts married life in a seaside cottage in Four Winds Harbour. This particular book explores adult life in a deeper tone but continue to capture the telling of a beloved story.
7. Anne of Ingleside (1939)
Anne is now the mother of five beloved children; James Matthew, Walter Cuthbert, Anne, Diana, and Shirley, we follow Anne and her children with each their own current perspective on life including Anne’s doubt of her husband’s affection towards her. Anne is in her late thirties to early forties in this book.
8. Rainbow Valley (1919)
Anne is in her early forties by this book and instead of following Anne we seek the knowledge of this novel through her children following them through their young adventures.
9. Further Chronicles Of Avonlea (1920)
Similar to the first Avonlea chronical we explore some of the lives of the residents of Avonlea.
10. Rilla of Ingleside (1921)
Within the final book Anne is in her early fifties in a time taken place during World War I. We follow Rilla, Anne’s youngest daughter at just fifteen years old as she lives through the devastating time awaiting the return of her brother in is fighting in the war.
