What Is A Sweet Pea?
Sweet Peas (Lathyrus Odoratus) is an annual climbing flower with delicate beauty and strong fragrances, growing in all colours of the rainbow. The flower normally blooms from late spring to mid-summer thriving in the breezier months; however, they can bloom earlier depending on the climate.
The Origin Of Sweet Peas
Sweet Peas were first recorded by a monk of the name Franciscus Cupani in sixteen ninety-five in Sicily Italy, however they are not native to the region, instead it is believed the wild ancestor of the plant originated in Aegean Island or the Eastern Mediterranean region. In the seventeenth century Franciscus brought the plants seeds to England and also sent some to Dr. Robert Uvedale, a British botanist and horticulturist who would grow them in his English garden marking the beginning of the plants journey to becoming a garden flower. Over time breeders were making their mark on the flowers developing different varieties of colours and forms.
The Symbolism Of Sweet Peas
In the language of flowers sweet peas together hold the symbolic meaning of blissful pleasure, friendship, kindness, goodness, gratitude and goodbyes; however, the colour alone of the sweet pea matters because each shade has their own symbolism which include:

- White: Innocence and Purity
- Red: Desire and Passion
- Blue: Trust and Loyalty
- Yellow: Friendship and Positive Energy
- Lavender: Whimsical and Enchantment
Sweet peas are also the secondary birth flower for the month of April which represent being thankful and goodbyes.
